THE BOOT CAMP PROGRAM FOR LUMBAR SPINAL STENOSIS

We completed 3 systematic reviews examining effective non-operative treatments (Click here to see reviews). We found there is an absence of effective non-operative treatments for lumbar spinal stenosis. To address this problem we have developed the Boot Camp for Lumbar Spinal Stenosis.

This boot camp program addresses the multi-faceted aspects of spinal stenosis with a focus on self-management and strategies on how to maximize walking and functional ability for life.

TESTIMONIALS

"I recently attended a Spinal Stenosis Bootcamp presented by Dr Carlo Ammendolia. I found it to be a very informative, practical and pragmatic workshop dealing with patients with this very challenging disorder. Dr Ammendolia’s hands on approach makes sense and it is supported by sound evidence. He has packaged the approach in a systematic and organized manner. I would recommend this workshop to any clinician with patients who have failed with other approaches."

- Jeff Balon BSc., DC, MD, CCFP

“I was diagnosed via MRI with severe spinal stenosis and ruptured vertebrae. I am 69 years old and have been in good health most of my life. Sciatic symptoms crept up on me over the last few years as I have aged. I started the Lumbar Spinal Stenosis Boot Camp exercises in Dec 2014 and did the exercises twice a day for 6 weeks. I started to notice some improvement almost immediately. I plan to continue on a very consistent basis going forward."

– Rick Debrow, Saskatchewan

“By following the exercise regime as set out by Dr Carlo, my stenosis pain
was cleared up within six weeks and surgery was avoided. Continuing the exercise regime on a daily basis I believe I can avoid stenosis pain in the future."

- Patrick R.

“After 10 years my chronic hip flexor pain is finally being alleviated through a combination of aggressive treatment and a daily exercise program. "However, determination to work through the pain and optimism are essential to success.”

- Maureen Q.

“I tried, feldenchrist, ultrasound, physiotherapy and acupuncture but nothing helped until I started the spinal stenosis program at Mount Sinai Hospital. The exercises made my legs and back strong again and I am able to walk again with very little pain.”

-S.B.

“The first thing I learned was that the pain did not originate in the areas where I was feeling it. Dr Ammendolia’s program taught me what movements aggravate my condition. I also learned patience; these flareups do take a while to heal. More aware of my vulnerability, I continue to exercising as instructed to alleviate the symptoms.”

Devices to improve walking ability in lumbar spinal stenosis; Devices to facilitate walking and function during flares of back pain; Devices to measure mobility and stooping in ankylosing spondylitis

Our approach focuses on tailoring treatment to maximize functional abilities, prevent further episodes and reduce risk of disability by giving the patients the knowledge, skills and self-confidence to self-manage their condition on their own for life. The goal of our research is to develop and test new approaches and this is how the boot camp programs came to be.
